Genie HD34 vs. HD44

Hey Folks,

 

I've been waiting to upgrade for a while now. I understand the HD44 is a far superior DVR as compared to the HD34.

 

I don't want to debate the comparison.


I just want to know if DTV is still shipping (trying to get rid of) the HD34, or are only shipping the HD44?


Upgrade question: Pay for upgrade or protection plan?

I have 3 DVRs. They are old, older, and oldest! The 'old' one just stopped outputting HDMI. It's an HR21-200.

 

I don't pay for the protection plan, but I'm wondering if it'll save me the $199 upgrade fee. I have a few questions about the PP:

  1. DTV says it's $7.99/mo. Is that per DVR?
  2. How many months would I have to pay for the plan b/f I can get the broken DVR replaced?
  3. Can the PP be cancelled at any time?

 

If on the protection plan, what does it take for DTV to replace a DVR? Right now the HDMI output isn't working, but it could get worse (if you know what I mean...).

Playback problems

Recorded the football game today. Had a clear signal at the time and the game was coming through fine. When I watched the recording, it kept stuttering and freezing. This has happened before though not all the time. I did a hardboot on the Genie HR34-700 and ran diagnostics. Came up with no problems. Can someone explain what is going on and how do I avoid this in the future?

I want to set my DVR to record a program that is coming up in a month so I don't forget about it, so how far in advance can I program my DVR to record?

Image freezing on recordings

I am having some problems with the image freezing/sticking/stuttering on some of my recordings on my Genie (HR34-700) and on one of my HDDVRs (HR24-200). At first this seemed to be happening only on the Spanish channels (ESPN Deportes 432 and Univision Deportes 455) but then the problem happened on the DirecTV UEFA channel 481-485? (can't remember which channel if it was 481, 82, 83, etc.). And then last week the problem occurred on ESPN 206 during the USA-Honduras soccer game. In short, the image looks like the image one would see when the image breaks up just before the bad weather/no satellite signal error appears. However, this was happening when weather was fine. Luckily for me in terms of troubleshooting, I recorded one soccer game on ESPN and Univision Deportes and I have uploaded short samples if someone can take a look and maybe offer some advice. In these samples the English (ESPN) version is fine, whereas the Spanish (Uivision Deportes) version has multiple problems. I recorded the same time frame.

 

A few other pieces of information that might be helpful:

(1) My signal strength is excellent. After advice from a member on this forum ( HR24-200: Split files + black screen ) I had the hardware on my roof replaced and a week after that change, I added the Genie, which meant more hardware was updated on my roof so that I have 9 recording slots (Genie + 2 HD DVRs). Again, running all the tests, my numbers look good but I'm happy to look to a specific satellite if someone thinks info. could be helpful.

(2) I have not had problems with one of the HD DVRs that does have a different coax once the lines are in the apartment, but I have not used that HDDVR as much since adding the Genie, so maybe the problem is the cable running from the wall to my boxes in the living room but I would hope that if the coax was bad that would have been picked up when the guy came out per the problem described in the link above. Also, I had this problem here and there prior to adding the Genie but had multiple problems and more frequently in the past few weeks.

(3) I spoke with a Protection Plan guy. He had me do a short system test. There are no errors other than "no phone line attached to the boxes." He had me record some stuff and there were no problems, but this problem happens about once every 12-15 recordings (again, that had only been on the Spanish channels until last week and that problem was actually a lot less prior to last week). He said this could be a network broadcast problem but I talked to a friend who recorded one of the same games and lives about 20 minutes from me and he did not have problems with his recording. I understand that 20 minutes away could mean a major difference if weather is bad, but, again, weather was fine as you will see in the ESPN English sample linked below.

(4) Just to reiterate the weather point. If weather is bad, I always get an error message that part of the recording might be missing and that message has not appeared on any of these recordings where I have these problems. When weather was bad during the day, I did receive those error messages since I added the Genie.

 

Here are the sample recordings. These are MPG files. VLC is a good viewing option, but use whatever works best for you. (I'll add that I know that quality is decreased because I recorded to DVD-R but there is no way to record an HD .TS with a file that sticks because my Hauppauge stops recording. I say that because the problem with the image is not the recording, but the file that is playing from my HDDVR.)

when starting a program late, I get message telling me DirectV is not available, and to try again later. Why?

When I select a program that supports starting at the beginning when program is already in progress, I receive a message that DirectV is not available, try again later.  How do I correct that?

NFL Sunday Ticket, Season Record Problem

I have an HD DVR HR34 with NFL Sunday Ticket and love it. When I use Season Record to auto record my favorite team, there is a strange problem that keeps happening on Sunday Ticket games only.

 

When I look at the guide to schedule my recordings it indicates that the games are 6 hours long for all Sunday Ticket games, but most games are typically on for only three hours of air time. So when I go to watch the games I recorded I find that they are split into two partial recorded programs.

 

I will use 12/21/14 Patriot's game @ 10:00 AM PST as an example. BTW Pat's WIN ;-)

The first partial recording of the game I want stops recording at 2:13 PM giving me 4:13 of recording time even though the game ended at 1:37 PM. Just when the first partial recording ends at 2:13 PM it starts recording a 2nd partial recording of the same channel after the game has ended which goes on for another 4 hours 23 minutes. Trying to view the second partial recording and there is no picture or sound which does not surprise me, because the game ended hours ago.

 

Anyone else seeing this problem?

Modern External Hard Drives Compatible with HR24?

Hi all.  I've successfully used a Western Digital 20EVDS hard drive as an external eSATA drive to my HR24 for years.  It's filling up now, and I'd like to buy a larger drive to replace the 20EVDS.  However, my cursory search of the drives I'm considering on Amazon haven't turned up comments that they are compatible with the HR24. 
If you have a drive larger than 2TB that you have successfully used with the HR24 I'm very interested to hear which drive(s) work well.

HR44 suddenly plays all episodes by default

In the last two days my HR44 is suddenly playing all episodes of a series by default, when I only selected one episode to play. This behavior is only supposed to happen if I select Play of the group, not one episode. I was told by tech support that this change just came through in an update to my DVR. Please change it back. If I select one episode to play, that's all I want to play. I appreciate the ability to play all episodes, and already have that if I chose to "play" the group entry, and do not wish to have the same functionality when I choose one episode to play.

If there is a way to turn this off, please tell me, otherwise please roll back this update, as the functionality already exists elsewhere.

Can I add an OTA antenna to allow my DVR to record local channels not carried by DirecTV?

I have both an HR24/500 and an HR34/700.

 

There are several local TV channels that are not carried by DirecTV that I enjoy watching.  Currently I switch inputs on my television sets to view these channels.  DirecTV carries local channel 2.1 but not 2.2 for example.

 

Is it possible to hook up my OTA antenna to my DVRs to allow me to view and possibly record these local channels thru the DVRs (in other words, to avoid having to switch TV inputs)?

HR24-200 wireless connection

I have the HR24-200 that until recently was directly connected to my home network via ethernet cable for internet access and now that it's been moved to another room I need to use a wireless connection to my router. Do I need the Wireless Digital Cinema Connection Kit or is there another way to make the connection?

THR22 (TiVo) not seeing VOD content (Channels 1202-1889)

I'm posting this to find out if this problem affects all THR22 DVRs, or just mine.  I'm seeing no content on Channel 1889.

Model: THR22-100, Software Version: 01B5, Service Map Version: 22 TIVOPVR SpigotMap.

 

Everything was working fine through 11/05.  But since Thursday, 11/06, Channel 1889 shows only one single episode.

The following channels do not show up on my THR22 (but do show up on an HR21):

HD-20 can't delete

Have two DTV HD-20 units.  Recorded a show a couple of weeks ago on what I'll call unit A.  Deleted it the next day. No problems.  However, it is still on "List" on Unit B.  Tried deleting it may times.  The good news is the delete works.  The bad news is it returns to the list within a few hours (next day?).  Deleted multiple times.  Returns every time.  How do I PERMANENTLY delete the recording.

Pink screen/ no sound

DiecTV replaced a defective DVR HR 34-700 replaced several months ago. The replacement has a problem about three or four times a week. The screen on the TV will turn pink and there will be no sound. There is no pattern to when this happens. I have noticed that it seems to happen at times when the DVR is not recording. The pink screen is corrected by turning off the DVR and turning it back on again. Therefore, I am sure that it is the DVR, not the TV. Any suggestions as to the cause and the fix?

Group Play on different DVRs

Group Play on the DVR that has the group starts from the oldest and goes to the newest. When stopped along the way, a play on the group resumes where it was. It works as one would hope. When a group play is done on a group that is on a different DVR it works similarly except when stopped along the way it always starts over. That makes it useless for a large group that can’t be watched in one sitting. I got a DVD just for recording groups with lots of episodes that I could just let play at night. If it starts over every time I could never get to the end and playing one at a time and keeping up just isn’t acceptable.

 

It is what it is and I guess this is a gripe a request for a software resolution, not a question. I would appreciate if one of you Directv guys could put it on the list and let me know if it is every fixed.


Samsung Smart TV RVU, how to access DVR in other room?

I've recently purchased and set up a Samsung smart TV with the built in RVU, so no DirecTv box is required.  I can view channels, see the DirecTv guide, but I can not find how to access the DVR to see my recorded shows.  The "Menu" button on the DirecTv remote brings up the TV's menu (like settings, picture, etc.) and Guide brings up the DirecTv guide (as it should).  I just can't for the life of me, figure out how to get to my recorded shows, or even search for new ones from this TV (living room, DVR is now in bedroom).  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Any way possible to move movies stored on Std DVR to HD DVR?

How can I control two tvs in two separate rooms with one dvr

I Have tvs in two rooms with two dvrs. Since the tvs are never used at the same time is there a way too eliminate one dvr and control either tv  with one dvr
