This has been happening for a while now, but it's been getting more frequent lately.
Periodically all the onscreen text on my DVR is changed into white squares instead of letters. The interface is completely unusable as you can't tell what selection you are highlighting. If I leave alone, the DVR will eventually completely crash (a few minutes to an hour or so). Usually it records scheduled programs fine during the time, but once it crashes, even the recordings don't record.
Rebooting the DVR fixes the problem.
This started last December and was doing it once a week, sometimes 2-3 times a week, and sometimes 2 weeks without a problem. But for the last two weeks this happens *every single day*. Every morning when I get up the DVR is crapped out like this and I have to reboot, which of course, takes forever and interferes with any scheduled recordings.
I'd contact support, but they'd just tell me to replace the DVR, and I can't do that as I have several hundred hours of recorded shows on this DVR I haven't watched yet. I'm terrified the DVR is going bad and I'll eventually lose those shows (that happened before).
Any ideas what is causing this and how to stop it???
My suspicion is that it's caused by the screen saver, and I've seen weird behavior of the screen saver before this happens. For instance, the screen saver (floating DTV icon) is just all black with no logo. For a while I tried never to let the screen saver kick in (I'd press a button on the remote), but that doesn't seem to make any difference any more and it doesn't help at night when I'm asleep and can't wake up the screen.
